This year’s ESCAPE event was held at the Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino. 155 volunteers from 37 teams from as far away as California attended this year’s event! We had 30 competent instructors on site refreshing our SAR skills and teaching us new ones over the three day event. The weekend’s events left us with 41 newly Field Certified volunteers, five new HAM Technicians, and one upgrade to a General license!
ESCAPE 2014 did not lack static displays or vendors this year! We had three vendors on site: Search Gear, Conterra Inc, and Durango Safety & Rescue Equipment. Civil Air Patrol and Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club brought their Communications Command Centers. The Santa Fe Fire and Technical Rescue Squad brought out all their vehicles for display and also the Rte 66 Flyers SAR brought one of their team’s powered paraglider.
During the General Meeting the 2014 Ralph Dawdy Memorial Award was presented to Chuck Baker of Catron County SAR for his tireless dedication to all things search and rescue throughout the years.
We also got a special treat this year with a visit by Howard Paul, PIO of NASAR, who updated the assembly on NASAR and MRA at a national level. Howard was on site throughout the weekend so our volunteers could ask questions and learn more about NASAR and the MRA.
Also during the General Meeting there was a motion and vote that was approved to change the NMSARC bylaws Article V, Section 4, Part B allowing a current NM SAR Council Board Member in good standing run for a second consecutive term if there is a vote of confidence from the NM SAR Council general membership during the election at the NMSARC General Meeting. With this change in place Larry Zentner of CAP and NM SAR Support Team was nominated and elected to serve a second term. We also welcomed one new member to the NM SAR Council Board this year, Roberta Armstrong of the Santa Fe SAR Team.
We were thrilled to have Chief Pete Kassetas as our Key Note Speaker after lunch. He provided us updates from the New Mexico State Police and offered his full support to the search and rescue volunteers statewide. Chief Kassetas honored our volunteers by handing out awards to the teams that attended the most missions within their districts for calendar year 2013.
Many thanks to this year’s ESCAPE Track Leads: Tony Gaier – Basic SAR (Field Certification) Track Lead, Karon Avery – Advanced SAR Track Lead, Spenser Moreland – Management Track Lead, Chuck Melvin – Canine Track Lead, Mike Dugger – Medical Track Lead, James Stockton – Technical Track Lead, Bill Boedeker and Charles Rogers – Ham Radio Track Leads, and all of those volunteers not mentioned who showed up and assisted setting up for the event Thursday evening and assisted throughout the event! Also the council would like to especially thank Matt Coulombe, Barbara Zabriskie, Brenda Wiedenmann, and Uli Blan for all their help with the Silent Auction tables and the registration area.
We had so many wonderful sponsors this year that not only financially assisted us they also donated items for the Silent Auction. For a third year in a row Casa Mesita Thrift Shop of Los Alamos took top honors as our above and beyond Titanium level sponsor. New Mexico State University, Santa Fe Search and Rescue, Organ Mountain Technical Rescue Squad and Coaxsher were our Trillium Sponsors. Santa Fe Opera, American Diesel Service, and Morris & Comanche Auto Service were our Beryllium Sponsors.
ESCAPE 2015 will be held at the Las Cruces Convention Center from April 17 through the 19, 2015! Keep an eye on the NM SAR Forum for updates regarding next year’s event!
